The flower's daily rhythm – opening its petals at dawn and closing them at sunset – was associated with the sun god Ra and the creation story, and it appeared in burial rituals, offerings, and festivities. Older sources describe blue lotus as part of ceremonial contexts, often in combination with wine and beverages.

From a botanical and chemical perspective, blue lotus is particularly interesting due to its content of natural alkaloids, primarily apomorphine and nuciferine.
