Blue lotus, scientific name Nymphaea caerulea, is an aquatic flower that historically held a prominent place in ancient Egypt, where it was depicted in art, temple reliefs and religious texts as a symbol of the sun, rebirth and the cycle of life. The flower's daily rhythm – opening its petals at dawn and closing them at sunset – was associated with the sun god Ra and the creation myth, and it featured in burial rites, offerings and festivities. Older sources describe blue lotus as part of ceremonial contexts, often in combination with wine and other drinks.

From a botanical and chemical perspective, blue lotus is of particular interest because of its natural alkaloids, above all apomorphine and nuciferine. Apomorphine is an alkaloid studied in the research literature for its effect on dopamine receptors in the nervous system, while nuciferine is an isoquinoline alkaloid examined in connection with plant-based extracts and their pharmacological profile.
