Blue lotus, scientific name Nymphaea caerulea, is an aquatic flower that historically held a prominent place in ancient Egypt, where it was depicted in art, temple reliefs, and religious texts as a symbol of the sun, rebirth, and the cycle of life. The flower's daily rhythm – opening its petals at dawn and closing them at sunset – was associated with the sun god Ra and the creation story, and it appeared in burial rituals, offerings, and festivities. Older sources describe blue lotus as part of ceremonial contexts, often combined with wine and other beverages.

From a botanical and chemical perspective, blue lotus is particularly interesting due to its content of natural alkaloids, primarily apomorphine and nuciferine. Apomorphine is an alkaloid that has been studied in research literature for its effects on dopamine receptors in the nervous system, while nuciferine is an isoquinoline alkaloid that has been investigated in connection with plant-based extracts and its pharmacological profile.
