Peganum harmala, also known as Syrian rue, esfand, and harmel bush, is a perennial shrub-like herb. Scientific studies have identified powerful MAO-inhibiting alkaloids, primarily harmine and harmaline.

The seeds are the most commonly used parts – they can be burned as incense and produce an intense, slightly bitter scent. In folk medicine, seeds, roots, and leaves have been used for a wide range of ailments, including stomach problems, parasites, menstrual issues, and as a mood enhancer.
